Frequently asked questions
Short, practical answers about using Studim.ai in a real lecture. Anything missing? Write to hello@studim.ai.
Which microphone should I use?
In the front rows the built-in microphone of a phone or laptop is enough. Further back, a small lavalier (clip-on) microphone or a USB microphone picks up the lecturer more clearly. Bluetooth headsets are a poor choice: many of them switch the phone to a narrow-band voice profile while the microphone is in use, and that hurts recognition. Prefer a wired microphone or the built-in one.
Phone or laptop?
Both work. Studim.ai runs in current Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari; the capture uses standard browser features (AudioWorklet and WebSocket), nothing Chrome-only. A laptop keeps the screen on more easily and sits on the desk with its microphone facing the room. On a phone, keep the screen on (see below).
Does it work in a large auditorium?
The app transcribes what your microphone hears. In a large hall, sit close to the lecturer or use an external microphone. Some rooms have a hearing loop or a line output from the sound system; ask the staff whether you can use one, it gives the cleanest signal.
Does it work for online lectures?
Studim.ai records the microphone only, not the audio playing on your computer. Two ways work: play the lecture on speakers near the microphone, or route the computer audio into a virtual microphone with a virtual audio cable tool. Capturing the audio of a browser tab directly is not built.
How much battery does it use?
A live lecture keeps the microphone and the network connection active the whole time, and that costs battery. For a long lecture, plug the phone or laptop in.
Can I lock my phone during the lecture?
Keep the screen on. On iOS, Safari stops the microphone when the screen locks or when the tab goes to the background, and the transcript stops with it. Android phones behave differently from model to model: some keep the microphone running, some do not. The safe way is to leave the screen on and plug the phone in.
What happens to the audio and the transcripts?
The audio streams from your browser through our gateway to the speech-to-text provider's EU endpoint and is not stored there. We do not keep the audio either, unless you switch on Record audio for a lecture and tick the consent box (Professor and Dean plans); then the recording is saved for replay in your Library. Transcripts, translations and the study tools (summary, glossary, quiz, key moments) are stored in our database in the EU. You can export everything as a zip and delete your account yourself in Settings. The details are in the privacy policy.
Which languages are supported?
Transcription, the language the lecturer speaks (12 languages): English, Turkish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese.
Live translation (41 languages): English, Turkish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Dutch, Hindi, Vietnamese, Persian, Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, Czech, Swedish, Greek, Hungarian, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Slovak, Bulgarian, Croatian, Serbian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, Slovenian, Georgian, Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Swahili.
The interface itself is available in several languages, with a right-to-left layout for Arabic and Persian.
What does the Free plan include?
Sign in with Google and you are on the Free plan, with no payment details. It includes 5 hours of live transcription per calendar month and the Library with the full summary, the first 5 glossary terms, the first 3 quiz questions, all key moments, search and export. Audio recording is not included.
How many hours do the paid plans include, and what happens at the limit?
- Lecturer: 25 hours of live transcription per month.
- Professor: 60 hours per month, plus audio recording and replay.
- Dean: 100 hours per month as a fair-use ceiling, plus audio recording and replay.
Hours count per calendar month (UTC) and reset at the start of the next month; unused hours do not carry over. When the hours of a month are used up, transcription pauses until the next calendar month. Everything already saved stays usable: the Library, search, export and the study tools. Prices and plan contents are on the pricing page.
Can the AI output be wrong?
Yes. Transcription, translation, key moments, summaries, glossaries and quiz questions are generated automatically. Clear speech in a quiet room transcribes reliably; distance, background noise and heavy accents lower accuracy, and the translation and the study tools inherit any transcript error. Treat the output as study notes: check it against the lecture and the slides, and do not rely on it alone for exams or assignments.
How do I cancel a paid plan?
Paid plans renew monthly or yearly and can be cancelled at any time; the plan then runs until the end of the paid period, and nothing more is charged. Signed in, open Settings and use Manage subscription: it opens the Lemon Squeezy customer portal, where you cancel, pause or change the plan and download your invoices. Without signing in, use the cancellation page (the Cancel contracts here button in the footer): it asks for the e-mail address of your account and the plan, confirms the cancellation on screen with a reference number, and offers a prefilled e-mail to support@studim.ai as a copy for your records.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, within 14 days of your first purchase of a paid plan: write to support@studim.ai from the e-mail address of your account and we refund the full price through Lemon Squeezy to the payment method you used. Your account switches to the Free plan immediately. This goodwill rule applies once per person and not to renewals; your statutory right of withdrawal is explained on the withdrawal page. A cancellation is different: it stops the next renewal, and the plan stays until the end of the paid period.
How do I delete my account?
In Settings, the card Delete my account removes your account and all its data: courses, lectures, transcripts, translations, study tools, recordings and settings. You type DELETE to confirm; the deletion runs immediately and cannot be undone. If you want to keep your data, export it first (the card Your data in Settings gives you a zip). If you have a paid plan, cancel it before you delete the account.
